Colorado requires a Colorado Bureau of Investigation background check for dealer and nearly all private sales, a waiting period of three days from the start of the check before delivery, and a minimum age of 21 to buy any firearm, with limited exceptions. Magazines holding more than 15 rounds cannot be sold or transferred. Since August 1, 2026, buying a specified semi-automatic firearm, meaning a rifle or shotgun with a detachable magazine or a gas-operated handgun with one, also requires a safety course and an eligibility card from the sheriff.

Colorado does not allow permitless concealed carry. The Pueblo County Sheriff issues concealed handgun permits to residents 21 and older who complete a qualifying training course and pass a background check; permits run five years. Open carry is generally legal but can be banned locally, and since 2021 cities and counties may adopt their own firearm rules, including limits on carry in certain places. Most Colorado deer and elk rifle hunting is by limited license drawn in the spring, with over-the-counter options only for certain species and units.
